How do you become part of a national committee?

The appointment to the National Order of the Arrow Committee usually comes along because one of the Vice Chairmen of the Committee find the person’s work to be indispensable to the success of the subcommittee and after careful vetting by the OA Chairman AND the national office, they are appointed by the chairman. Typically this would be done after years of service on a national sub-committee and increasingly, in recent years comes about after service as one of the Key Volunteers appointed by the chairman and assigned to a subcommittee. So, the answer usually has to do with years of indispensable service in a specific area at the time of vacancy by a retiring member or one who is not being reappointed for any number of reasons. An alternative to this classic method of appointment is through the Regional BSA directors, who, in concert with the National Chairman identify and ask a viable OA Regional Scouter to serve as Region OA Chairman. Quite often current members of the committee nominate others who they think may fill a void, either in skill set or geographically. All of the nominees are discussed by the Chairman with the National professional Director, and when consensus is reached, they are appointed by the chairman for a one year term…these terms normally run from June 1 through May 31 of the following year.
