The National Communications and Technology Subcommittees of the Order of the Arrow have recently partnered to create a national volunteer board. The volunteer board is intended to be an all encompassing list of opportunities to support the OA as a national volunteer. While the board is currently limited to positions within the Communications and Technology Subcommittees, it is our intention to add additional national volunteer opportunities to this board after a beta period.
What opportunities are currently listed on the national volunteer board?
This volunteer board is a compilation of volunteer positions within the Order of the Arrow at a national level. As a nonprofit organization that prioritizes youth leadership, the OA relies on a dedicated team of both youth and adult volunteers to ensure the successful operation of its programs. The organization is incredibly grateful to these volunteers and for your potential interest in lending some of your time and talent to the OA.
Q. What is a Key Volunteer in the Order of the Arrow national structure?
A. A Key Volunteer is an adult Arrowman who one of the Vice Chairman of the National Order of the Arrow Committee could not accomplish his goals without. They are members of the sub-committee that their Vice Chairman leads and come from all over the country to achieve the specific objectives of that work group in support the Order of the Arrow Strategic Plan…each of them is appointed in May at the National Meeting, after they have submitted their goals to the Vice Chairmen. Appointment is for a one year term, allowing them to wear the Order of the Arrow Sub-Committee pocket flap during that period from May to May. Key Volunteers form the basic group of support for the activities of the National Order of the Arrow program and recent appointments to the National Committee have come from their ranks.
Q. Dear Ray,
We have a Scout that is three nights short in meeting the two year, 15-night camping requirements. He is a volunteer fireman – is there anyway volunteer time can make up for the camping shortfall for eligibility to the OA?
Thank you.
Mike
A. Dear Mike,
Thank you for your question regarding the camping requirements necessary for OA membership. The Guide to Elections states the following regarding the camping requirement:
"The youth must have experienced 15 nights of Boy Scout camping while registered with a troop or team within the two years immediately prior to the election. The 15 nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of at least five consecutive nights of overnight camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. Only five nights of the long-term camp may be credited toward the 15-night camping requirement. The balance of the camping (10 nights) must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps of, at most, three nights each."
To reiterate, the camping requirements can only be met with actual camping experiences.
