News from the Summit: SummitCorps surpasses NPS expectations for week one

With the first week of SummitCorps under our belt, the news of the amount and quality of trail completed are outstanding. Check out an excerpt from Youth Incident Commander Brandon Azoulai's final report.

"After the first week I just wanted to let you know that everything went amazingly well, especially from the youths' perspective! Every morning deployment was early and a total of 14,800 feet of trail (almost 3 miles) was completed. For the number of guests (202) this is proportionally on track, but more importantly the NPS is impressed by the quality of the trail that is being produced.

Having had a couple of opportunities to work on the trail I can attest to the high spirits and motivation all the guests felt while working. The iCorps did a fantastic job in fostering this on the trail, ArrowBistro kept everyone contently fed and the evening recreation was a tremendous success every night. To quote Jeff West [New River Gorge National River chief ranger] at an evening briefing, we were working on perfecting the details of the event, because everything else was going so well. When people were leaving on Saturday they couldn't stop saying what a good experience they had at the event.

Although it required an insane amount of logistical planning and fine tuning, the day of Friday recreation went off without a hitch. Everyone loved what they chose and the lake was fantastic"

The local and regional media are giving SummitCorps lots of attention. Check out some of the coverage.
