Funds Needed for
Maury Clancy Indian Campership Fund
By Billy W. Walley, Vice Chairman - Recognitions and Awards
For over 30 years, the Order of the Arrow has provided funds through the
Maury Clancy Indian
Campership Fund
to assist Scouts of American Indian
heritage in attending an approved council long-term camp program. Since
its creation, over 1,500 youth have benefited from the campership program.
Funds are provided for up to 50% of the cost of one week at an official BSA
long-term camp.
From its inception, the program has been self-sustaining as a result of at
will donations by Order of the Arrow lodges and sections. In addition, a
major contribution traditionally comes from the American Indian show at the
National Order of the Arrow Conference.
However, the demand for camperships in the last two years has substantially
depleted the funds available for the program. In 1999, a total of
$14,863.50 was distributed to help 205 Native American Scouts attended a
council long-term camp event. In 2000, a total of $15,293.00 in funds was
used to send 219 Native American Scouts to summer camp.
Due to the importance of the fund, lodges and sections are strongly
encouraged to participate by taking collections at all appropriate OA
events. Contributions should be transmitted to:
